200 check dams coming up in Telangana

Vishwas News

Hyderabad, July 27:The Roads & Buildings Department took up the construction of 200 check dams with potential for storing 18,695 lakh litres of water. The project will incur very little additional expenditure as part of constructing bridges across various streams and rivulets across Telangana.
According to R&B Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, as part of a Rs 18,000-crore project for strengthening, widening and laying roads, the government identified 532 bridges where such check dams could be constructed. After inspecting every location, it was found that check dams could be constructed at 200 spots to store water.
The check dams constructed so far, the Minister said, had a positive impact on improvement of groundwater levels and are also serving as drinking water sources for cattle. He also said the construction cost of a bridge-cum-check dam was only 12 per cent to 15 per cent more than a road bridge. Agencies
