Telangana will protect sericulture farmers, says Etela Rajender

Karimnagar:Finance and Civil Supplies Minister Etela Rajender on Thursday promised to take steps for the development of mulberry industry and protect the interests of sericulture farmers as in other States.
The Minister was speaking at a meeting organised to educate farmers about mulberry cultivation and drip irrigation held at KITS college, Singapur of Huzurabad mandal. Farmers from Karimnagar and Warangal districts participated in the meeting.
Addressing the farmers, Etela said that the government would initiate measures for the growth of sericulture in the district and that he would discuss the issue with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. "The government will respond positively and extend support to farmers," he said. Karimnagar has earned a name as the rice and seed bowl of Telangana, and the district should now strive to become a role model in mulberry production in the future, he said.
"Sericulture industry, which earlier occupied the top position, has lost its past glory, and when the sector was merged with the Horticulture Department, people thought that there is no future for the mulberry industry. However, a number of farmers were still dependent on mulberry production in the district," he said, adding that Chief Ministers in undivided Andhra Pradesh had neglected agriculture. "All this changed when Chandrashekhar Rao declared that agriculture is the only sector that could provide more employment to unemployed youth," he said.
"Telangana government is giving top priority to farm sector by taking inspiration from Gandhi's slogans that development of the nation is not possible without rural independence. In the entire country, Telangana is the only State which introduced different types of schemes to protect agriculture sector in order to achieve golden Telangana. Of Rs 1.70 lakh crore State budget, Rs 50,000 crores were allocated for agriculture. In order to provide water to agricultural fields, irrigation projects have been constructed on fast track by spending crores of rupees. Per year, Rs 7,000 crore were spent on providing round-the-clock power supply to agriculture. While Rs 12,000 crore were allocated for Rythu Bandhu, Rs 1,000 crore were earmarked for farmer health insurance scheme," he said.
