Hyderabad, Feb 13:Armed with broomsticks, they hit the c main road to write a new Guinness record and to spread the message loud and clear on the need to keep the city neat.
Under the Swachh Hyderabad initiative, over 15,000 students and youngsters assembled at BR Ambedkar College in Ramnagar division and swept the road. The existing record was set by Vadodara municipality, which saw a similar endeavour by over 5,000 participants.
The students and youngsters swept the street for three minutes and organisers provided brooms. Traffic was diverted on the stretch to avoid any inconvenience to the participants. The event was organised as part of creating awareness on the Swachh Survekshan programme, which will be conducted in the city from February 15 to 22. The event has already made it into the record books with High Range Book of World Records confirming the record.
Speaking on the occasion, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao said even before the Central government launched the Swachh Bharat campaign, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had launched the Swachh Hyderabad initiative.
He appealed to the citizens to participate in the Swachh Survekshan campaign in large numbers and help Hyderabad bag the top position.
GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said the municipal corporation is conducting different awareness programmes involving citizens in Swachh Hyderabad initiatives. He stated that this year 4,041 cities were participating in the Swachh Survekshan 2018 contest.
