New RTC fleet for Hyderabad may be delayed

Vishwas News

Hyderabad, May 7:The plans of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) to introduce a fleet of 150 new buses, including ordinary and Metro Express buses, in the city, could be delayed for a few months.
The corporation had earlier decided to operate new buses in the Greater Hyderabad Zone from March to improve the services and provide hassle-free commuting for passengers in the city. Though plans were drafted to get the new fleet and have them join the existing city fleet by the end of April, the plans got delayed.
According to corporation officials, the plans were pushed to a further date as the procurement process of buses was still going on.
The officials said the new buses were being acquired to replace buses that are more than 15 years old in the existing fleet. The initial plan was to acquire 185 new buses, but the corporation later slashed the number to 150.
"The plans are now in the tender processing stage and procurement will soon be taken up," said an official, adding that the city would have the new fleet running by July or August.
Presently, the Greater Hyderabad Zone has 3,800 buses on the city roads, out of which 185 vehicles have completed 15 years of service. In the past, old buses from the city were operated in rural areas, but now all the 185 old buses will be condemned and scrapped.
As per rules, vehicles that are 15 years or more are prohibited from plying in the city, with the decision aimed at checking pollution.
Apart from pollution, maintenance of old buses is also a costly affair as spares need replacement and overall costs get escalated, added an official.
