New footpaths covering 310 km soon

Hyderabad, July 23:After launching a special drive to clear encroachments on footpaths in the city, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is now constructing new footpaths covering 310 km at an estimated budget of Rs 87.71 crore. The municipal corporation is making all efforts to make the footpaths ready by October this year.
The move comes in the wake of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao stressing the need for pedestrian-friendly measures, including footpaths and strengthening public transportation in the city.
With Metro Rail services set to commence on the LB Nagar-Ameerpet route from next month, the civic body intends to complete the construction of 310 km footpath by October. As part of this, GHMC is taking up the construction of 152.23 km footpaths at a cost of Rs 29.64 crore, while the Hyderabad Road Development Corporation Limited will be creating footpaths spread over 152.23 km with a budget of Rs 58.07 crore.
On priority basis, GHMC will take up footpaths on Metro corridors, main stretches and city buses routes and in areas where vehicular traffic is high. GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said the pedestrian facilities would be constructed in Uppal, Malakpet, Santosh Nagar, Chandrayangutta, Charminar, Falaknuma, Rajendranagar, Yousufguda, Begumpet, Jubilee Hills and Quthbullapur circles.
At present, there are footpaths covering nearly 300 km across the city. Of these, majority of the earmarked spaces have been encroached by commercial establishments, petty vendors and street vendors.
With complaints rising over the lack of pedestrian-friendly facilities, the municipal corporation had launched a special drive to clear encroachments on footpaths. Till date, nearly 7,000 encroachments had been cleared on the footpaths in different areas, he added.
In addition to this, the GHMC has also decided to implement street vendor policy more effectively. "We have been taking measures such as issuing identity cards to street vendors, selecting the pending zones, forming street vendors committee," Reddy said.
