Lightning, flood alert systems in TS soon

Vishwas News

Hyderabad, July 16:Lightning strikes have become a major cause of concern for the State government as they have claimed the lives of at least 15 persons besides a number of livestock during the monsoon in the past three years. After scouting for solutions to enable it to take preventive measures, the State government is all set to implement a lightning forecast system that would enable it to alert local officials concerned and also people to minimise casualties.
Further, a flood forecast model is also being developed to curb flooding in Hyderabad. city. While the lightning forecast system will be implemented by the Disaster Management department, the urban flood alert model will be taken up by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) in collaboration with other departments like Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Disaster Management department and Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).
Advanced system
"The lightning alert system is already under implementation in countries like US, Canada and also in some States of India where scores of people die every year due to thunderstorms during monsoon. We are setting up a technologically advanced system with the support of an US agency, 'Earth Networks', where we can forecast lightning at least 45 minutes before it strikes an area along with its travel direction based on the wind direction," an official in the Disaster Management department told Telangana Today.
The official stated that forecasting lightning would help the locals avoid venturing into the area and thus minimise casualties. A command centre has been established and the system is being tested on a pilot basis. Necessary guidelines have been prepared for implementing the project on a regular basis and a report was submitted to the State government for approval recently, he said.
