Kaleshwaram emerges as a learning centre

Hyderabad, April 10:The Kaleshwaram Project, with its dams, barrages, tunnels, pumphouses and canals, has emerged as a destination to study the planning and execution of a multi-faceted irrigation project on schedule despite the complexities involved in implementing it.
On Monday, the chairman of the Central Water Commission (CWC), S Masood Hussain, announced his intention of having officials from the CWC come and visit the project sites.
The CWC chairman visited the Medigadda, Sundilla and Annaram barrages, pumphouses and Packages 6 and 8 of the project as well as the Lakshmipur tunnel accompanied by Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao. The Minister explained the finer points of the project to Hussain as he conducted him to different project sites.
Later, speaking to reporters as he concluded his visit, Hussain described the ongoing work as a "very, very efficient and meticulous job," and that he wanted to come and see for himself the project works.
"The diversity of works under progress at various sites of the Kaleshwaram project presents a unique opportunity and I proposed to the Minister that some of our officers come and visit these sites. Normally, officers do not get an opportunity to see such a spread of work at any one project," he said.
Speed, execution lauded
The CWC chief also said that the concreting works he saw on Monday at different project sites were among the fastest. He also said underground works such as pumphouses were usually "very very difficult tasks," but these were being pursued "very very efficiently and meticulously."
Hussain said: "I would compliment Harish Rao and his entire team of engineers for this stupendous work which has been accomplished. It is a great achievement for the people of the State. It is a landmark project for the State and the Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and the Minister are keen on its early completion."
This is not the first time that Kaleshwaram has been hailed by Central government officials as a project that others can learn from. Earlier in February, it was the 15th Finance Commission secretary Arvind Mehta who, after a visit to the project sites, heaped praise on it and called the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme as an example for other States.
Mehta particularly praised the construction work of the project and had said he was impressed by the quantum of work that had been completed in a short period of time.
He too had promised that the next visit to Kaleswharam would include the entire team of the 15th Finance Commission.
Even as the project receives accolades from top Central level officials, it has also emerged as a near pilgrimage site for people in the State with several ministers and legislators leading large delegations of their constituents to see the project sites for themselves.
