Hyderabad's Gandipet to be spruced up

Vishwas New

Hyderabad, May 14:Left to languish for decades and hit by administrative apathy that resulted in encroachers making the most of the opportunity, Osman Sagar popularly called Gandipet is on revival path with the State government earmarking a budget of Rs 100 crore.
After the government accorded administrative sanction of the amount, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is in the process of initiating a series of works aimed at protection and beautification of the water body which has been the lifeline for Hyderabad for decades.
One key aspect of the project is to construct a bund and set up grill mesh around the lake at an estimated cost of Rs 18 crore. The HMDA has already invited agencies to take up the bund and grill mesh works covering 25 km of the 48-km periphery of Gandipet.
The first phase of 25-km periphery coverage is to commence from the section office of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) located in Gandipet village and stretched till Khanapur village.
According to the HMDA officials, this particular stretch of the periphery was chosen to start the work as it happens to be the entrance for the lake and most frequented by people. As a popular picnic spot, this is more prone to unhygienic conditions with visitors dumping food and trash, an official said.
"A call has been given to the agencies for taking up the works and hopefully the civil works should commence next week," he said. The HMDA is also carrying out drone surveys covering the topography of Gandipet. The exercise is expected to be completed shortly after which, architects are to be invited to design tourism promotional activities at the lake and also for taking up beautification initiatives and improve the aesthetics around it.
Given the government's focus on Osman Sagar beautification, a special task force 'Gandipet Lake Development Task Force' is to be set up under the aegis of HMDA along with other departments such as Tourism, Revenue, Irrigation, HMWSSB, TSSPDCL and Social Forestry.
The expenditure for the works are to be met directly through HMDA funds and in the initial phase, officials are also planning to set up walking track, cycling track, road formation, chain link mesh fencing, street lighting, shoreline strengthening and landscaping covering 25 kms along Osman Sagar perhiphery.
Proposed here also are a host of visitor amenities including revolving restaurant, cable car, house boats, night camping space and food courts. "For commercial viability, aspects of public private partnership or lease mode are under consideration," the official added.
