Hyderabad's Cykul working to make cycling cool again

Vishwas News

Hyderabad, April 5:City-based startup Cykuk, which is working to help people take up cycling for health, active lifestyle and as a transit option, is planning to increase its fleet in Hyderabad as well as other cities. Currently, it has about 2,000 cycles including 1,200 in Hyderabad. Cykul wants to add 10,000 cycles in a year to two and this will mean an investment of Rs 8-10 crore, says Deenanath Harapanahalli, Founder and CEO, Cykul.
The company is now under contract to manage the Palapitaa Cycling facility near the Botanical Garden, also at the Gachibowli Stadium and others. "Cykul has allowed more than a 1,00,000 people experience cycling and have healthy and recreational rides through our weekend and corporate-employee engagement programmes," he says.
About 400 people in the city are taking up cycling on a weekly basis, he says.
Cykul has bike stations at DLF Buidling, Financial District, Hitec City and other places in the city. It has also tied up with drug major Dr Reddy's for Redibike, wherein 400 cycles available.
Hyderabad apart, Cykul is present in Gurgaon, Jaipur and Ujjain. "Safety is a concern for many. We have training modules and literature. There is also app-support to record distance travelled and other metrics. We have Cynergy, an indoor spinning competition designed for wellness, team building and recreation. These cycles are fitted with sensors. Participants can help others learn cycling," he says.
Pathways? "If there are enough cyclists, roads and pathways can be planned. If the number is less, the pathways will be taken away by cars and motorcyclists, as has happened in the city," he says.
Companies wanting to introduce cycles at workplace pay Cykul a fee. With 25 bikes in each station, companies are taking 1-6 stations. There are also residential communities which subscribe to cycles at Rs 399 a month. Among others, it has launched its services with a MyHome Group project. Cykul is generating about Rs three crore a year in revenue.
"Older cities are actually better suited for cycling," he says about the intent to launch the bike sharing service in other parts of Hyderabad. These cycles have automatic locking and unlocking facility while app collects data about the ride, gives safety tips, helps them with financial transactions for extra minutes. Video clips can also be available for improving safety skills, he says.
