Hyderabad, Mar 9:From special hash tags on social media to rallies, sale offers and even teaching how to ride a scooter in flat four hours, the manner in which Hyderabad celebrated International Women's Day was varied. Talks on spirit of womanhood at seminars, team lunches, the launch of all-women's railway stations, acts of kindness, free medical camps, inauguration of SHE toilets, girl students showcasing self-defence skills, felicitation of achievers and flash mobs, the kind of celebrations were as diverse as they could be.
Automobile showrooms gave special offers and discounts on vehicle service charges, and free pickup and drop. Honda got women safety instructors to teach women to become independent scooter riders in just four hours. The theme for the day being 'Press for Progress', Salar Jung Museum organised a special all-women discussion on 'How will you #PressforProgress in 2018?'
Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) celebrated the day with several events - art and photography exhibitions, stand-up acts, poetry, group dance and songs, talks and a quiz. Shikha Goel, IGP (CID); and Soumya Kidambi, director for Society for Social Audit, Accountability and Transparency, Telangana; were the chief guests. South Central Railway, meanwhile, took a significant stride on the day by declaring four railway stations 'All-Women Employees Stations'. Begumpet in Secunderabad Division, Vidyanagar in Hyderabad Division, Chandragiri in Guntakal Division and New Guntur in Guntur Division saw women employees handling duties. SCR also felicitated 25 women railway employees of the zone for their outstanding service on the occasion. Speaking at the celebrations at Civil Supplies Bhavan, Commissioner CV Anand said women should not be silent on their rights. "They must demand and achieve it. Women are now more aware of their rights than earlier. For the development of society, they should be more conscious," he said. Celebrations at Dr MCR HRD Institute of Telangana were high-pitched with a bouquet of activities. In the painting camp, staff and trainees made a number of creative paintings depicting the themes of 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao', 'Save the Girl Child', 'Woman Empowerment' and 'Freedom is the Ultimate Luxury', among others.
