Forum calls for talks to settle Secunderabad Cantonment Board issue

Hyderabad, May 30:With the dust over the reopening of the roads in the Secunderabad Cantonment Board yet to settle, public forum Open Secunderabad Cantonment All Roads (OSCAR) has called for talks between the authorities and the civilians to sort out the issue.
Though the roads were reopened after a long gap, civilians had complained of Local Military Authority (LMA) personnel 'harassing' them by refusing access to the roads to people who were not wearing helmets or did not have identity documents with them. At the same time, families of Army personnel too had raised concern over the roads being reopened citing security issues.
OSCAR office bearers said the convenience of the public had to be taken into account, because there were lakhs of civilians who depended on the roads passing through the Cantonment area for their daily needs, while the Army personnel who were citing security issues were very few in number.
S. Chandrashekar, spokesperson of OSCAR, said talks should be held and that the Ministry of Defence should initiate steps to identify these families of Army personnel and move them to a separate fortified location within the Cantonments with a special basic infrastructure and guard them round the clock.
"Only identified families of Army personnel must be allowed inside in such fortified zones. This must be possible on the fringe areas of the cantonments to avoid any disturbance in form of traffic or noise. Instead of fortifying the entire cantonment, that particular part where they are accommodated must be taken care of and this will be a cost effective solution," he said.
At the same time, the Ministry of Defence had on Monday issued a statement on the issue, pointing out that the decision to reopen the roads was taken after giving due thought to the likely implications, and that the decision was open roads in military areas for one month, and thereafter review the nature of traffic passing through these areas. A final decision on the opening or closure roads would be taken after feedback from the LMA on whether these roads could be opened for civil traffic, completely, selectively or as in the past.
