Delay in desiltation works worrying GHMC corporators

Vishwas News

Hyderabad, May 24:With monsoon fast approaching, the delay in completing desiltation works in nalas and demolishing encroachments has become an issue of worry for several corporators who used the GHMC ordinary meeting on Wednesday to voice their concerns.
Gudimalkapur Corporator B Prakash wanted to know the reasons for delay in taking up desiltation works. With rainy season approaching, there was every possibility of nalas overflowing and inundating neighbouring areas, he said.
ast Anandbagh Corporator A Narsing Rao said desiltation was due for long in the Banda Cheruvu nala. The waste has piled up for five feet near the nala and there was a need to take up desiltation here and things could turn bad during rainy season, he added.
Other corporators complained that contractors in some areas were not constructing the retaining wall at the nalas after taking up desiltation works.
Chief Engineer (Maintenance) Md Ziauddin said compared to last year, the desiltation works had gone up by three per cent during this time of the year.
All excavated waste was being transported to Jawaharnagar dumpyard and payment was being made on the basis of material weight brought to the yard, he said.
Adding further, Mayor Bonthu Rammohan said not many contractors were keen on taking up desiltation works. Despite, the Earnest Money Deposit payment being reduced and few other relaxations, not many were evincing interest in these works, he said.
On delay in demolition of nala encroachments, Chief City Planner S Devender Reddy said nearly 840 critical bottlenecks were identified across the city. Of these, 357 structures had been demolished and another 200 would be cleared by month-end, he said.
At few locations such as Fox Sagar nala, four floor structures had to be demolished and officials were acquiring such structures to expedite the works, he added.
