Akun Sabharwal asks officials to shift purchased paddy to mills

Hyderabad, May 16:Taking a serious note on the allegations of PDS rice recycling, Civil Supplies Commissioner Akun Sabharwal on Tuesday ordered the transfer of some officials facing these allegations.
Karimnagar District Civil Supplies Officer (DCSO), A Usharani was transferred and ordered to report at the head office, while Deputy Tahsildar MA Nawaz and Food Inspector Anwarulla Khan were handed over to the Revenue Department for legal action.
On May 11, the enforcement team of the Civil Supplies Department had seized 540 quintals of PDS rice being transported from Varun Industries at KC Camp in Huzurabad mandal. As fallout of that raid, three officials faced action, while other officials were warned of strict and immediate action against those found involved in smuggling of the PDS rice. The rice seized was being smuggled for recycling, officials said.
On Tuesday, Sabharwal made a field visit to Karimnagar and Warangal districts, and inspected Indira Kranti scheme Purchase (IKP) centres at Manakondur and Keshavapatnam. He also visited IKP centres in Warangal Rural, Warangal Urban, Bhoopalpalli and Mahabubabad, and held review meetings with officials in Hanamkonda.
Later, during visits to Jangaon and Yadadri-Bhongir districts, Sabharwal instructed officials to make ground level visits to purchase centres and take necessary steps to see that the farmers do not face any loss or problems. Paddy purchasing should be completed quickly and the shifting of the purchased paddy to rice mills should also be done immediately afterward, he said.
To date, the Civil Supplies Department has purchased 20.06 lakh metric tonnes of paddy worth Rs 3,327.71 crore from 3.21 lakh farmers through 3,119 purchase centres. The entire paddy has been shifted to rice mills, a press release said.
